Next Stop: Main Street Extension

In October, our team shared how a streetcar stop comes together, the locations and progress of each future stop, and how they are a critical piece of getting us to Ride in 2025! Today, we’re one step closer as KC Streetcar Constructors are installing shelters at the different platforms along the alignment.

Standard Platform

The standard platform is a side platform. All the stops on the starter line downtown are considered side platforms because passengers only board the streetcars on one side. The standard shelters are 8 feet tall and 15 feet wide. They are made with steel and aluminum and feature edge-lit glass panels, acrylic roof, and a wood seat.

On Tuesday, June 25, the first shelter frame was installed at the northbound Union Station stop. Using a forklift, crews lifted the shelter, with the overhead canopy installed, from the truck and installed it to the already built platform.

Crews are continuing with shelter installation and completed the southbound WWI Museum/Memorial (27th Street and Main Street), southbound Armour (Armour Boulevard and Main Street), and Southbound Art Museums (45th Street and Main Street) shelter installations. Over the next week, crews plan to also install shelters at these stops:

  • Southbound Southmoreland (43rd Street and Main Street)

  • Northbound Art Museums (45th Street and Main Street)

  • Northbound WWI Museum and Memorial (27th Street and Main Street)

Once these shelters are installed, crews will continue installation for the second group of shelters:

  •  Northbound Southmoreland (43rd Street and Main Street)

  • Northbound Westport (39th Street and Main Street)

  • Northbound Armour (Armour Boulevard and Main Street)

  • Northbound Union Hill (31st Street and Main Street)

  • Southbound Union Hill (31st Street and Main Street)

This summer the roof rafters and acrylic ceilings, and station markers will be installed. Later this year the glass, aluminum panels and additional items such as the trash cans and real time arrival (RTA) message boards will be installed.

Center Platform

The second type of platform is a center platform, which is used when there are tracks on both sides of the stop. On the Main Street Extension, there are two center platforms: the Plaza Transit Center and UMKC streetcar stop.

In July, crews will use a crane to install the first shelter for a center platform at the UMKC streetcar stop. Then in August, a crane will be used again to install the shelter for the final center platform at the Plaza Transit Center streetcar stop.
