🚧 Traffic Changes Ahead: Pershing Road 🚧

On Tuesday, February 20, KCSC crews began installing the Pershing Crossover at the Main Street and Pershing Road intersection. The Pershing Crossover is a special section of track that will allow streetcars to turn around for operations or maintenance needs. This work will happen in multiple phases starting in mid-February and lasting through early Summer 2024, weather and unforeseen circumstances permitting. Below is information about the first four phases of work. This blog post will be updated with additional phases as we near the end of Phase 5.

 

Phase 5: Beginning Thursday, April 25, Pershing Road east of Main Street will close for approximately 4 weeks, weather and unforeseen circumstances permitting.

Crews will continue building the Pershing Crossover on the east side of the intersection.

Traffic Impacts:

  • No thru traffic on Pershing Road between Main Street and Grand Boulevard.

  • No left turns from southbound Main Street onto Pershing Road.

  • No right turns from northbound Main Street onto Pershing Road.

Pedestrian Impacts:

  • The north side and east side crosswalks are closed.

  • The sidewalk on the east side of Main Street from Pershing Road to 27th Street is closed.

  • Pedestrians should use the southside and west side crosswalks to navigate through this intersection.

  • Pedestrians can also use the midblock crosswalk at the signal just north of the Main Street and Pershing Road intersection to cross to the west side of Main Street.


COMPLETED PHASES

COMPLETE Phase 1: Crews will begin work on the west side of Main Street between Kessler Road and Pershing Road. Work will be in the center lanes, closest to the fountain. This phase is anticipated to take 3-4 days to complete, weather and unforeseen circumstances permitting.

During this phase, crews will demo and grade for track.

Traffic Impacts:

  • Reduced lanes for eastbound and westbound traffic on Pershing Road between Grand Boulevard and Kessler Road.

  • Reduced lanes for northbound and southbound traffic on Main Street between 20th Street and 27th Street.

  • Traffic signals will be adjusted to allow right hand and left hand turns at the intersection.

 Pedestrian Impacts:

  • The crosswalk on the west side of the intersection is closed.

COMPLETE Phase 2: Crews will work on the west side of Main Street between Kessler Road and Pershing Road beginning Thursday, February 22. Work will be in the outside lanes, closest to the Union Station and the WWI Memorial. This phase is anticipated to take 3-4 weeks to complete, weather and unforeseen circumstances permitting.

During this phase, crews will demo and grade for track, pour track concrete and start work on pedestrian upgrades, including new curbs, sidewalks, ADA ramps and crosswalks.

  • Reduced lanes for eastbound and westbound traffic on Pershing Road between Grand Boulevard and Kessler Road.

  • Reduced lanes for northbound and southbound traffic on Main Street between 20th Street and 27th Street.

  • Traffic signals will be adjusted to allow right hand and left hand turns at the intersection.

  • The crosswalk on the west side of the intersection is closed.

  • The crosswalk on the south side of the intersection is closed.

  • Pedestrians should use the east or north side crosswalks at the Main Street and Pershing Road intersection.

  • If you are on the southwest corner of Main Street and Pershing Road, pedestrians should use Kessler Road or 27th Street to walk around the work.

COMPLETE Phase 3: Beginning Monday, March 18, Pershing Road west of Main Street will close for approximately 4 weeks. Pershing Road will reopen on Friday, April 12, weather and unforeseen circumstances permitting.

During this phase, crews continue building the Pershing Crossover.

  • No traffic on Pershing Road between Kessler Road and Main Street.

  • No right turns from Kessler Road onto Pershing Road.

  • No left turns out of Union Station onto Pershing Road.

  • No right turns from southbound Main Street onto Pershing Road.

  • No left turns from northbound Main Street onto Pershing Road.

Pedestrian Impacts:

  • The crosswalk on the west side of the intersection is closed.

  • The crosswalk on the south side of the intersection is closed.

  • Pedestrians should use the east or north side crosswalks at the Main Street and Pershing Road intersection.

  • If you are on the southwest corner of Main Street and Pershing Road, pedestrians should use Kessler Road or 27th Street to walk around the work.

COMPLETE Phase 4: Beginning Friday, April 12, Pershing Road will have lane reductions for eastbound and westbound traffic. This phase of work is anticipated to take 2 weeks to complete, weather and unforeseen circumstances permitting.

Crews will begin initial work in the northeast and southeast corners of Pershing Road and Main Street.

Traffic Impacts:

  • Reduced lanes on Pershing Road between Grand Boulevard and Kessler Road.

  • Reduced lanes on Main Street between 20th Street and 27th Street.

  • Traffic signals will be adjusted to allow right hand and left hand turns at the intersection.

Pedestrian Impacts:

  • The east side and south side crosswalks are closed.

  • The sidewalk on the east side of Main Street from Pershing Road to 27th Street is closed.
